My Notes and Ruminations

I have designed this wiki site for three different reasons

  1. to create and centralize note-taking
  2. to practice using this technology
  3. to share my notes

Hi again Janie,

I just read your 1/31 post on Participatory Action Research. It seems even in its methods it is trying to break the role of "researcher as oppressor." Interesting. The whole concept pretty much blows my mind. It seems rather utopian, but then it represents one example of an "open system." Why close the system of research to the subjects? Why not open it up to their input on design? I suppose the answer comes down to their level of sophistication with the concern of the study as well as their sophistication with various research methods. Since they are not "trained," wouldn't they be more likely to integrate problematic aspects to the study?

I am also dubious about the political underpinnings of the methodology. Couldn't you see this methodology as applicable without the political agenda? Does it have to be used with subjects who are oppressed?

One question I am struggling with the entire notion of participatory design for class curriculum (much more so for participatory research) is when are students ready for this kind of "agency?" My wife and I both had similar experiences in 4th grade where we lived through an educational trend to let students be more self-paced and self-directed learners (this would have been in the 60s). We both have recollections of not learning that much. When are students ready for andagogy?

Hi Janie,

This site looks wonderful. I'm impressed with it. How do you get access to pm wiki? Do you host it yourself? Also, how do you manage to take two classes at once!

I promise to be a better commenter.

Lennie
